Alighieri Academy -- A History
Fourteenth century Europe saw many wonderful, and terrible, things. The Ottoman empire began sweeping across the Balkans; the Little Ice Age began; The Great Famine killed millions; The Hundred Years War between England and France starts; Ottoman Turks and Serbs Battle; and the Black Death kills about a third of all the population of Europe. This, however, was only the beginning.
Out of the turmoil, unholy creatures started to rise in the midst. Researchers estimate that hundreds of thousands people died from hunger and disease; a little known secret suggests it was more than that. These creatures, vampires, werewolves, demons, (among countless others) rose to great heights. They claimed at least half of those who supposedly died of “natural” causes, extending their lives, but ending the ones that they had known. People began to notice these disappearances. When one became a vampire, they appeared to be dead, and their families buried them. A few days later, graves became empty and people knew nothing of the source, assuming grave robbers did it. However, when people began to sicken, then disappear in the dead of night, on full moons, people began to wonder if it was truly illness, or something far worse. Rumors spread, and with it, panic. People crowded the churches and finally someone decided to step up and attempt to cure the problem.
Nem Raikou led a coalition of Monks and Warriors to found Alighieri Academy in the fifteenth century in hopes to create a guild of students who could slay the rising army of demons, vampires, and werewolves among other creatures. The Monks and Warriors trained these students in a traditional sense, using religious items to battle these creatures. This did not work out so well. Though they kept the army of these creatures at bay for a few hundred years, they slaughtered many slayers in the process.
Abhigya, leader of the monstrous army, led his creatures to slaughter those who only wished to protect humanity. But the Monks, Warriors and their students were not yet experienced enough to successfully fight these creatures. Great loss occurred on both sides of the map, but with loss comes experience.
Now, slayers have perfected the art of killing these beasts by means of modern weapons. Those who still fight “old school,” (that is, with religion, crosses, holy water, and prayers) choose to combine it with modern weaponry and claim their method is more successful (Though hardly anyone teachers this form anymore). Recruiters bring regular high school students to this Greenland based school from all over the world. These students are still taught the fundamentals: Mathematics, English, Foreign Languages, Science, World History, etc. but they are also taught how to kill, how to fight, and how to deal with just about every situation involving the enemy.
Some slayers train to eliminate these monsters all together; others join the unholy ranks to become a rogue: a slayer who kills other slayers. The tides are turning for another war, and these students are the only hope for humanity. Will you save the world, or be the one to destroy it? Welcome to Alighieri Academy.
