[ How had her life become so complicated in such a short period of time? It seemed like only yesterday she was at the Burrow with Ron and Harry enjoying the summer’s break before having to head back to school, although after their fifth year, that summer hadn’t been as happy as others had been. They had had to deal with a lot of change, and what had gone down at the Ministry. Harry had seemed more withdrawn, for obvious reasons, and even Ron didn’t seem to be his normal annoying self, but most of all Hermione was just worried there would be too much change, and not for the better. And now here she was, at school, where she thought things could still stay black and white, and it had turned out to be loads of shades of grey. It had all started because of that stupid dance, something she shouldn’t have even fussed over but she loved dances and had wanted to make up for the last one which hadn’t ended very well. It had gone wonderfully until Ron had thrown a jealous fit, which had shocked her to the core. This year she thought he’d finally buck up and ask her but no, once again he held back, and so she had gone with a Slytherin to try and make him see his mistake. That hadn’t worked very well at all, and then ...there was him, a boy she hadn’t even ever thought she’d want to go near on purpose, yet she had, many times, and now he wouldn’t get out of her mind. Put on top of that, Ron was acting all – she didn’t eve know. He was definitely acting differently and she still couldn’t figure him out. That wasn’t helping matters, needless to say.
Now she walked down the corridor, finally making it to the outside courtyard and taking a seat. It had finally stopped snowing for a bit, and with no wind, it was actually not too bad outside. She found a bench that was mostly clear of snow and took a seat, pulling out one of her books. With her thicker robes and her Gryffindor scarf, plus some earmuffs, she was quite comfortable. She tried to concentrate on the book, but there was a snowball fight going off in one of the far corners of the courtyard, and her mind was most definitely somewhere else. She lifted her right hand, looking at the ring that wound around her finger – the one he had given her. Anyone who knew him well would know that this ring was his, but only she knew what it really symbolized – what he felt for her, which still threw her mind in a spin. She wasn’t sure she should even trust this, especially after knowing how he had acted all those years, but when they were alone things were different. It wasn’t good, that was for certain, because if Harry or Ron ever found out, things could become strained between them and that was the last thing she wanted. As much as she cared for him, they were her best friends, and she’d never leave their sides.
Something was definitely going on behind closed doors, and not all of it was good. She didn’t know what he was up to exactly, but it didn’t bode well. She had to find out, of course, for the safety of the school. No matter how much he thought it’d help his parents, and perhaps save them from a worse fate, it wasn’t what was best for everyone. There had to be another way, and it wasn’t this way. Hermione sighed softly as she continued to look at the ring, not paying attention to anyone or anything around her anymore. Finally she set her hand down on the book, attempting to concentrate on the words but finding it difficult. Lately she hadn’t been able to focus on much at all, even school work which was normally quite easy for her to do so. Not to mention on top of that she was still worried about that connection Harry had with Voldemort, and was furiously trying to research what steps they could take and where they had to go next. She would make sure her best friend succeeded, there was no doubt in her mind that he would be able to do it – well – no, she had to believe in him, because if his best friends didn’t, where would that put him? Things were going to start changing, more than they already had, and Hermione wasn’t sure she was ready for it.

The past few days had been difficult for Pansy. Ever since her fight with Draco, things hadn't been the same. She barely paid attention in class anymore, and ignored the annoying "what's wrong?" questions from people she neither cared nor wished to speak to. She once feared that someday it would all come to this. That she would be left all alone and unwanted. The other day, Draco had made it very clear to her that her help was neither needed nor wanted. And she still never found out what exactly his mysterious mission was. She didn't understand how he could start out by telling her how dangerous everything was, and then proceed to tell her to stay out of everything and leave him alone. Was he trying to kill her? Did he actually want to see her go insane? The worst part of all was that Pansy has broken off her friendship with Adrian Pucey to be with him. To prove her loyalty to him. As if that even mattered to him anymore.
Pansy was still furious of the fact that Draco was spotted sweet talking with Ginny Weasley and the Granger girl in the hallways in between classes. What was with it that Granger girl always trying to steal her men? Was this her way of payback for all the insults Pansy shouted at her practically every time they passed each other in the hallways? Adrian had told her that she was nothing but the victim of some stupid bet he had made with his friends, but she sure didn't seem to think so. And what reason would Draco have behind even speaking to her in the first place? She was never able to find out, Draco had wounded her so much that night that she didn't even have the strength to defend herself, let alone find out what he had been hiding from her all along. What was there left for Pansy Parkinson to do? She once had it all perfectly pictured in her head. She was going to take the Dark Mark and fight alongside him, help him accomplish his goal (whatever that was), and then become happily married as husband and wife and have lots of children. But she had lost him now, and was left with nothing.
Strolling along the courtyard, Pansy gazed around at the other students. They all seemed so happy, hand-in-hand with their friends and smiling. Not a single soul was alone, except for her. Just watching them alone made her sick. She wanted to leave. She wanted to quit school and leave this miserable place for good. She never wanted to see Draco Malfoy again, and if she did she would slap him even harder than she did the last time. He had her in such as way that she wasn't even sure if she would ever be herself again. If she would even heal. Glancing at the floor, Pansy aimlessly walked around the courtyard, trying to think of something to do, or somewhere else to go. She thought about going to the forbidden forrest and go and an adventure. Perhaps if she were lucky enough, she'd come in contact with a creature that could send her to the hospital so she didn't have to attend classes and just be left alone in peace and quiet. But Pansy didn't want to be left alone, she just wanted to be loved.
As Pansy walked on glancing at the floor, she saw a figure emerge from the corner and smack right into her. Holding her hand to her head, she looked around and saw a bunch of books sprawled out on the floor. She turned to face the person who collide with her, which just so happened to be Miss Granger herself. Wonderful. Normally, Pansy would just throw her an insult and walk away. But this time, Pansy was in no mood to be forgiving. Ever since her brawl with Draco, she had lost all her senses. She didn't feel like holding back anymore, she just wanted to let lose and act without thinking, not caring where it would lead her. Before the girl had a chance to say anything, Pansy gave her a little shove and kicked her book to the side with her foot. The time for playing nice was over. "Watch where you're going mudblood!" She shrieked, and stared at the girl. She was about to hurl another insult at her, but something had caught her attention. It was a particularly familiar ring on the girl's finger. But it wasn't just any ring, it was Draco's. Overcome with furry, Pansy grabbed the girl's wrist and pointed to the ring. "You little thief! Just how exactly did you manage to steal this?"

[ Hermione found her thoughts drifting from her studies as she sat there in the courtyard, gazing off at no particular spot, lost in thought. She debated about going to find Harry and Ron and see what they were up to, but she had a nagging suspicion that they were out at the Quidditch pitch, despite the colder air. It was a place for them to get away from things but there could also be the chance she’d run into someone she didn’t want to see. After Slughorn’s New Years party fiasco with McLaggen, Hermione was keen to avoid the Quidditch pitch and she didn’t fancy running into him any time soon. It hadn’t been the best of ideas, but she had been frustrated and it had seemed like the only logical solution at the time to her difficulties with Ron. Of course there were some other things weighing on her mind as well, but once again, the party hadn’t helped as much as she had thought it would. Even in dark times there would always be a light of hope, and that was what Hermione knew she would have to hold onto. Even when things seemed hopeless, she had to believe in something – and that someone was her best friend Harry. Even when he didn’t have faith in himself, she and Ron had never left his side. It was what best friends were for and after everything they had been through there was no question that she would follow him until the end. Even if he was too stubborn sometimes to realize this. How many times had she and Ron, well mostly her, but she knew Ron’s heart was in the right place, convinced Harry that they were going to do something with him even when he didn’t want them to? It was too dangerous or too risky – honestly, it was as if he didn’t realize that he needed them at times. Perhaps it was just her innate ability to look past the emotional aspects of situations and look at things from a strictly logical point of view, but there were times and places to take risks, and she would take them. Yes, she wasn’t too keen on breaking rules but sometimes it was just necessary, such as the previous year.
She had been more than happy to help with Dumbledore’s Army and rebel against Umbridge because honestly that woman had been completely awful and she was only going to hurt the students, not help them. They all needed to know how to fight, and just reading without practicing wasn’t going to get them that experience. Voldemort wasn’t going to wait around until they were all armed and ready to attack – he would strike without warning, without them even knowing it was going to happen, and they had to be prepared for that. She was happy that Dumbledore’s Army, or at least the concept of it, hadn’t died after they had succeeded in driving out Umbridge. Everyone was still practicing and she had still been helping a few who needed some fine tuning on their charms and offensive/defensive spells. Umbridge had been very wrong when she had said there was nothing out there that could harm them – completely delusional, that woman. Had the attack at the Ministry not proven her wrong? Hermione still had dreams about that night when they had gone after the Prophecy and they had fought the Death Eaters – and each time it brought chills to her. Gryffindors were supposed to be brave all around, right? Not necessarily. While Hermione was often the most level-headed in situations, it didn’t mean she wasn’t afraid for her friends. She couldn’t lose them, they meant too much, and they had so much to live for. They would succeed in defeating the Dark Lord, she knew it. Voldemort wasn’t going to win. She just had to keep that mindset even when times looked tough. This year so far hadn’t been full of danger… yet. It seemed almost normal, with the usual woes about homework and studies, add on top of that the fact that she was dealing with feelings she hadn’t really had much experience with at all, and it made this year seem so much more complicated.
Hermione finally stood, resolving that she wasn’t going to get any work done out here. Perhaps she’d just return to the common room and curl up in front of the fire to read. The idea was sounding more inviting the longer she thought about it. She gathered her things and made her way back into the corridors of the castle. Her thoughts wandered to the Potions essay that she needed to complete and she started going through the different book titles that she remembered seeing in the library. She was positive that she’d find what she needed in that very last row. If there was one place Hermione had completely memorized it was the library, and it was a place she knew from corner to corner. It came in handy too when they had to research things, and while she might not know exactly where something was, she usually had a good idea. She was so lost in thought on which books she needed to look at, she didn’t see the other person until she had run into them. ”Sorry,” she said quickly, moving to pick up the books and put them back into her bag. Then she heard the familiar voice of Pansy Parkinson and frowned slightly as she slid her last book into her bag. Hermione inwardly bristled at the words coming from her mouth but she wasn’t going to let the likes of Pansy get to her. It still hurt every time she heard someone use that word but after her second year she tried not to let it rile her up. The last thing she wanted to do was give Pansy the satisfaction of getting under her skin. So Hermione steeled herself as she stood, giving Pansy a calm look and was about to say something when Pansy suddenly grabbed her wrist. The ring. Inwardly Hermione chided herself for not having put the charm over it. She had just been caught up in so much else that it hadn’t really been on the forefront of her mind. However, this wasn’t something that they needed to get into here, and it really wasn’t something Hermione cared to explain. ”I’m not a thief, Pansy, you can’t steal what’s given to you,”
she said calmly before moving past the girl to continue walking. Hermione took out her wand, casting the charm over the ring, making it invisible to everyone except the giver and herself. It would just bring unwanted attention anyhow. [/blockquote] Credits to: REAL SLIM SHADY !? @ caution 2.0

It never occurred to her what it felt like to be alone until now. How was it that she could go from sitting in Draco's lap to the slapping him in the face all in one evening? All she wanted was to protect him and be with him forever. She wanted to fight by his side and ease the pain and worries that troubled him. And what did she get in return for her concern? Nothing. Nothing but hurt and betrayal. Maybe there was more to the picture than what Pansy saw. Maybe he wasn't allowed to bring an outsider into the mission, and the only way of telling Pansy that was to be firm with her. But Pansy felt as if there was something more to it than that which caused Draco to deny her yearn to help him. Was this all because of Pucey? She only befriended him so she could make Draco jealous, not the other way around. How did he even find out about the two of them anyway? She hated how he acted as if he practically owned her, never allowing her to break free and befriend other people besides the two bumbling idiots that went by the name of Crabbe and Goyle. But here she was, free to choose to be with whomever she wanted. Yet, she didn't feel happy. She just felt empty and alone. She wondered if she would ever be able to make things right with Draco again. She wondered if he was just as miserable as she, and would come crawling back to her and beg for her mercy. As much as she adored the sound of it, she wasn't even sure anymore if that was what she truly wanted. Was it better to be free, did being free even guarantee happiness? She didn't know, and she didn't care anymore. She just wanted one thing. And that was Draco Malfoy.
The thought of Draco being with another girl sickened her to the core. Was he really the kind of person to go off and find someone else? She knew it couldn't be anyone form her year, they were all too scared of Pansy to do such a thing. She began to wonder if the rumors about him conversing with some of the Gryffindor girls were true. Was was he getting at? Was that his sick way of trying to get Pansy jealous? If that were the case, then Draco would be wasting his time. She could never be jealous of a Gryffindor. Never. But it wasn't that she was jealous of them, she was disturbed that he was spending more time with them than he was with her. It made her wonder what he had been doing all this time Pansy thought he was simply moping around the common room. The sickening part of all was that Draco wasn't the only Slytherin boy she knew that supposedly spent time with Gryffindor girls. There were rumors that Adrian Pucey's story about the bet and the Granger girl was all a lie. That he was in fact into her. Before she broke of their friendship, Adrian had told Pansy that he only took the Granger girl to the dance because he had lost a bet with his friends. He told her he was disgusted by mudbloods and the only girl he really loved was her. But now, she didn't know what to believe anymore. It wasn't the first time Pansy had been lied to her face. She was just glad that she was done with him and ended it before things got worse. But really, how could it possibly get anymore worse than this?
No matter what she did, Pansy's head could not stop throbbing. The make matters worse, she had just collided with the Granger girl, who apologized and collected her books. There was just something the girl that made Pansy want to explode into a range every time she saw her. Pansy felt as if the girl was so inferior to her, yet she always walked around with a haughty know-it-all attitude and stood her ground whenever she was pestered. Maybe she thought that because she was Potter's friend, she could do no wrong. Maybe she thought that no one could touch her because Potter would come after whoever did. It was time for someone to put an end to all of that. She was sick and tired of seeing her face in class, answering all the questions, flashing her prefect badge everywhere, and giggling arm-in-arm with Weasley and Potter. Everything about her sickened Pansy. She wanted her out of her life for good. She was going to yell another insult at the girl but something had caught her eye. The Granger girl was wearing a ring. But not just any ring, his ring. Pansy was sure of it.
What could possibly be her intentions for stealing it? Did she plan on giving it to Potter so they could put some sort of hex on it and harm Draco? Whatever the reason, Pansy wasn't going to let the girl walk away with the ring. She wondered what Draco would say when she returned it to him and told him how she saved him from harm. This was her only chance to make things go back to the way they were. Pansy instantly followed the Granger girl and watched her cast some sort of charm over the ring. She watched it disappear and wondered if it was really gone or just invisible. Pansy cackled at the girl's response and looked at her with a raised eyebrow. "And who exactly it this person that gave this ring to you?" She didn't expect the Granger girl to tell her, although she probably guessed it was either the Weasley boy or Potter that sneaked in the common room and stole it at some point. A smirk stretched across her face, realizing that she would just aimlessly taunt her until she cracked and told her the truth. "Surely it can't be Draco. He wouldn't even touch a mudblood, let alone give something of his to someone like you."
