Weight: 180 pounds (84 kg)
Distinguishing Features(if any): well, he’s black….
Play-by: Alfred Enoch
Overall appearance: Dean is fairly recognizable, being a tall black boy among a majority of short underclassmen. He’s about as tall as Ron, but a bit larger in terms of musculature. His skin is quite dark but overall very smooth, and his face typically isn’t adorned with pimples or blemishes. His hair is very dense but soft, and he usually keeps it short and manageable. He walks with an air of confidence and stands tall, as he is practically a fully grown man. His eyes are very expressive.
He can almost always be seen in the Hogwarts outfit, which he finds to be quite comfortable. However, in a more casual setting, he likes simple jeans and tee-shirts, which he inherited from his mainly non-magical upbringing. The back of his right hand maintains small blemishes from where Umbridge forced him to write with the Blood Quill, and his palms are worn (if not smooth) from their willingness to perform hard work.

Erised: To grow up and have a large, loving magical family, surrounded by his dearest friends.
Patronus: Joining DA last year was his fondest memory. Though Umbridge was the cause of several unhappy experiences, Dean relished the opportunity to strengthen himself and grow closer to his friends. The corporeal form is of an elk.
Boggart: A severed hand, which symbolizes helplessness and the inability to act if needed.
Dementor: The sinking feeling he got when Umbridge forced Harry to admit that there was no danger in the world. It made him feel more hopeless and angry that she wouldn’t even listen to him, and that he was punished for arguing with her. This lack of control, as well as the stubborn idiocy from Umbridge, makes this his worst memory.
Amortentia:
Pumpkin Juice: this is the scent that he associates with first coming to Hogwarts, the start of his magical career, and the meeting of his best friend, Seamus Finnegan.
Freshly baked bread: it reminds him of his comfortable, easygoing home
Pine: Dean loves the smell of pine trees, especially those that surround the Forbidden Forest and Quidditch pitch.

Dislikes:
- Voldemort
- Immature people
- Death Eaters
- The corrupt Ministry
- Potions
- Various teachers (including Umbridge and Snape)
- Being bored
- Slytherins
- Feeling contained or restricted
- Laziness
- Not knowing his real father
- Not being able to complete homework on time: it’s always been a pet peeve of his
- Helplessness
- Being put down
Strengths:
+ Athletic. Dean is very physically fit and he loves being outdoors playing a good game of football or (more commonly in a Hogwarts setting) scrimmage of Quidditch. He’s very glad that he made the team this year.
+ Creative. He’s an artist through and through, and can be seen drawing banners or other commissions for anyone who asks… Except maybe Slytherins. He’s also a decent writer and has been, on more than one occasion, known to be “good with a quill”.
+ Accepting. Dean knows what it’s like to be in a tough situation, and to be one of the few black people in a mainly white school. He knows what it’s like to know very little about magic and be made fun of because of it. Dean believes in second chances, and he won’t judge you if he hasn’t met you.
Weaknesses
- Outspoken. Though Dean is an overall patient young man, he occasionally has small fits of rage. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and isn’t afraid to stick his neck out there to say what he believes, even if it gets him into big trouble.
- Stubborn. He may be accepting of people, but once he forms an image it is hard to break in his mind. He holds very strongly to his beliefs, but this also means he may not listen to even his closest friends’ good advice if he thinks he is right.
- Ignorant. Growing up in a Muggle-based household, Dean occasionally is left behind in wizarding terminology or tact. Even though he’s lived in a magical setting for six years now, he occasionally has his moments of losing grasp of what’s going on.
Overall Personality: Dean is a tried-and-true Gryffindor. He lacks prejudice in general and is extremely likeable. He has many friends outside of Gryffindor, but his closest remain true to his house. He is well-known throughout the school for doing his own thing and not letting others change who he is inside, so people come to him a lot for advice. However, his most common piece: “Whatever you do, never regret it.” He has an assertive personality, and isn’t afraid to offend authority if it means he can protect those he loves.
He is also very loyal. Though he and his best friend, Seamus, disagree on many points, they get along quite well, and Dean would do anything for him. In terms of Harry Potter, Dean has always stuck by his side. Even when the rest of the school doubted him, even when Ron Weasley turned away, Dean has always had Harry’s backing and support. Dean is also fairly adaptable, and is willing to drop everything if he is needed. His loud mouth tends to get him into trouble, but he isn’t afraid to laugh at his own expense or create humor to ease tensions. In general, he’s very calm and collected, with only the occasional impassioned outburst, and he is very true to his friends.

Family:
Mother: Alexandra Thomas (Muggle)
Father: unknown (wizard)
Step-Father: Edward Thomas (Muggle)
Dean’s father left when Dean was just a boy, leaving him and his mother all alone. Alexandra didn’t know that he was a wizard at that time, nor did she know Dean had any magical blood. Dean’s paternal father was killed soon after, having refused to join the Death Eaters. Alexandra remarried when Dean was six. The Muggle couple had several daughters in the following years, all of whom non-magical. However, Edward raised Dean as if he were his own son.
Step-Sisters: Alice Thomas (9), Marilyn Thomas (8), Patricia Thomas (6), Emily Thomas (3)
Dean is fairly close to his step-sisters, and never doubts that they were meant to be a family. He is very protective of them, and they love being around him (even if they squabble amongst themselves).
Pets: Star, a pretty golden barn owl
Residence: London
History:
Dean’s life was rather unexceptional before Hogwarts, unless you want to count his good relations with his family. It seems like not many families are close anymore, but Dean’s exceeded the norm. He was (still is) extremely close to his mother, and welcomed his stepfather gladly, along with his several younger sisters. He would have grown up to live in a happy Muggle family had it not been for his Hogwarts letter. As it was, there were a couple of incidences, starting when he was 3, where he showed magical capability, but he’d never considered himself magical.
However, his whole life changed when he came to Hogwarts that fateful year. He’d never heard of Harry Potter besides the hushed murmuring on the train ride, so it made him proud to share a house with such a famous person. Yes, he was certainly sorted into Gryffindor, where he quickly became friends with Seamus. He also met Harry, Ron, and Neville Longbottom, whom he shared his dorm with, and Hermione Granger, through classes. (Dean and she formed a tentative but genuine connection, as they related fairly well. Where Hermione was seen by most as a teacher’s pet, Dean understood how she felt and refused to judge her like everyone else.) They became rather good friends, and it was through Harry that Dean learned of Quidditch. Though his heart will always be set on football (soccer, for you Americans), Dean rapidly became an avid Quidditch fan. His first year at Hogwarts, he not only established his backing of Harry Potter, but his drawing talents and Quidditch enthusiasm also surfaced in himself.
Just one year later, this loyalty to Harry was already going to be tested. After the Parseltongue incident, Dean began to wonder if his initial idea of Harry was wrong. However, he had no reason to doubt his friend, because he didn’t know much at all about Parselmouths other than their snakelike connections, so he stood, tried and true. He joined the Dueling Club, which kindled his desire to learn and cast spells. Though he didn’t know it at the time, this marked the start of his affiliation to Light. He got to know a lot of people in that year, made many acquaintances, and increased his understanding of the wizarding world. He never really faltered in his classes, but at least he wasn’t swarmed for help like Hermione.
His third year was somewhat uneventful. He joined Care of Magical Creatures class because he and the gamekeeper, Hagrid, were on good terms, but after the lesson on Hippogriffs, he wasn’t entirely sure he was willing to continue with the class. He also explored several other new courses, such as Divination, Ancient Runes, and Astronomy, but he only stuck with Divination in the end, because it was the class he had most friends in. The most remarkable part of the school year for Dean was his first visit to Hogsmeade, and he’s always been able to go back whenever trips were arranged.
His fourth year was another trial for his loyalty to Harry. Almost everyone in the school doubted him when his name came out of the cup, but Dean knew deep down that Harry wouldn’t do anything like that. As for the Yule Ball, Dean went with a very pretty 6th year Hufflepuff named Ariadne Lucas, though he jokingly danced with Seamus, and they could later on be seen snogging in the garden. They briefly dated for a few weeks but broke up for lack of interest. This was also the year that Dean showed interest in Ginny Weasley, who was turning out to be a beautiful young lady, which also contributed to his breakup.
His fifth year was by far the most eventful of his Hogwarts career. His relationship with Umbridge, as already stated, was rocky to say the least, but he wouldn’t allow himself to be beaten down by her. In his fifth year, Dean began to strongly oppose the ministry, and he held loyalty to Dumbledore, Hogwarts, and Harry Potter himself. Dumbledore’s Army was clearly extremely interesting to him, and he pursued this interest passionately. He also became better friends with Ginny Weasley, who he eventually became extremely interested in. He and Seamus, in this year, argued a bit more over their viewpoints, but Dean proved willing to stay by all of his friends, despite any discrepancies.
Dean has always been a supporter of Harry Potter and Gryffindor, especially now of all times. He is still quite interested in Ginny Weasley, and hopes to be very close to her (even if Ron doesn’t like it). He’s still quite caught up in his classes, though his grades aren’t soaring like Hermione’s or most of the Ravenclaws. He’s ready to fight for Harry if he is needed.

”Expecto Patronum!”
Dean flicked his wand boldly, and then watched as gentle wisps seeped from the tips of his wand. Disappointed, he sighed and broke off the charm. When would he ever get it? He shook his head in the darkness, and then gazed around him. So far, so good. Okay, he wasn’t strictly allowed to be out at night, but… Umbridge hadn’t set any night patrols out yet. He wasn’t going to fool himself. It was only a matter of time before she did so.
But right now, it was so much more important to practice this Patronus Charm. What if the Ministry ended up to be more corrupt than anyone had expected? Hell, Harry said he was attacked by Dementors even before school started, and if it hadn’t been for Lupin back in their third year, he would have been done for. So now, more than ever, Dean was determined to stand by the DA, ready to fight for what was right.
His mind went to the underground group. He thought of their combined strength and resolve. He remember just the other day when Hermione finally had managed to cast her first corporeal Patronus, second in the group after Harry. It was distinctly an otter. Since then, the whole of DA had been working their arses off, steadfast in their willingness to fight for the cause. And sure, Dean had already learned so much from Harry. They’d already begun learning to attack on their own, learn spells and charms that Dean wasn’t entirely sure would be taught in the regular curriculum.
”Reducto!” he cried suddenly, casting sharply at a bush. It burst in a violent flutter of leaves and twigs, some of which striking his cheeks and chest. He thought of Ginny, who was practically a master at the curse, along with pretty much any other spell she picked up. He thought of Harry, who taught them these spells because they needed to know. He thought of his rebellion towards Umbridge, who was forcing them into submission, and his OWLs, which he’d have been unprepared for if it hadn’t been for the DA. As it was, he was still learning. He had to get good enough, had to know more, had to cast stronger spells….
He set his face, resolute. Dean felt a rush of power, a rush of excitement and joy. ”Expecto Patronum!” he said again, but this time there was a momentary hesitation.
Then a large horned and hoofed beast burst forth, cantering out towards the Black Lake. Dean watched it in awe and amazement as it slowed to circle around. He could see it clearly: its mouth, its antlers, the ripple of its muscles under silvery hide. It was an elk, larger than Harry’s stag, and he could see it towered above his tall frame when it came close. He reached out to it as it drew near. He never fully touched it before it vanished, but he was so thrilled that he couldn’t contain himself.
Dean let out a whoop before he stowed his wand back into his robes and then dashed back up to the castle.
