[ She just couldn’t concentrate. She could have sworn she re-read the same paragraph multiple times already, and wasn’t making any headway. With a sigh Hermione set down the Charms book and folded her arms on the table, laying her head down on them and closed her eyes. The library was quiet this late at night as most students were already back in their common rooms or making their way to them. She had Prefect duty – rounds – soon, probably within the hour if she had judged her time appropriately. Every house would have one of their Prefects walking the halls, as Hogwarts was rather large and there was no way that only one person could cover every part constantly. Unless of course they had a multiplying charm of some sort, but that wasn’t really the point. Hermione wondered who else would be on Prefect duty that night, who else would be roaming the halls for hours watching for students out of bed or trying to cause mischief. And that drew her thoughts right back to him. That frustrated her to no end that he kept popping up randomly in her thoughts, or when she was in class and supposed to be paying attention, and her thoughts wandered back to that night…day…however long they had been together. She had made excuses of course when she came back to the common room, studying hard in the library, and everyone believed her because that was something she did – constantly.
Yet she knew differently, and Hermione still wasn’t sure what to make of it all. What he had said, what he had told her, the way he had acted – every bit of her was still suspicious, still on edge, wondering when his façade would drop and she’d see what he was really up to. But at the same time, he had been more vulnerable when he had been alone with her than she had ever seen him – ever thought he could be. He had been gentle, nice, and– bloody hell, she had to stop thinking about it. With a quiet, frustrated cry Hermione stood up from the table and gathered her books, pushing them into the confines of her messenger bag. The library was too quiet, for once, and she was finding herself alone with her thoughts – not a good thing when he was the center of them all. She was almost positive he was getting a good laugh right now, although she doubted he’d ever admit to them that he had been anywhere near her, much less what they had shared together, for the simple matter of his reputation. He was probably snogging Pansy or some other girl, or whatever it was he did. Hermione steeled herself against those thoughts, shoving them aside with a roll of her eyes. Honestly, she couldn’t let herself get wrapped up into that. As much as she wanted to believe everything he had said, she couldn’t
He was who he was, a two-faced git who only ever thought of himself, it was what he had always been and she couldn’t, wouldn’t let that one time completely change her perception of him. It was downright absurd that she’d be even thinking that he might be different, under all of that cocky, cruel exterior. This was what she kept telling herself, forcing herself to believe it. Hours upon hours talking, of spending time together – it had to be a part of some plan, some ploy to knock down her defenses so that he could make her vulnerable, manipulate her, and then use her to get to Harry. It was the only logical thing she could think of, but at the same time it seemed utterly illogical, for the simple matter of him getting anywhere near her, especially after she had punched him in the face, been prepared to hex him all the way to tomorrow, and he had made it clear that she was beneath her – slimey ltitle cockroach. That’s what he was. That’s what he had to be… right? Hermione’s thoughts kept battling each other as she made her way back to the common room, dropping off her books in her dormitory and then as she reported to Professor McGonagall for Prefect duty. Once it was her time, she began the long trek through the halls of Hogwarts, almost silent save for the occasional ghostly banter, or the sounds of Peeves causing mischief in some far off corner of the castle. So help her, if he tried anything on her, any of his tricks, she’d teach him well. Hermione turned down another corridor, her shoes clapping on the stony ground as she kept a watchful eye for any students who should not be out. She passed by the room of requirement, and paused, before flushing pink and moving quickly away from that area, walking down the corridor and around the bend so quickly she didn’t even see the person until she had run into him and stumbled back. ”Sorry, wasn’t watching where I was – you.”
Dra – Malfoy, of all the people she could have run into, it was him. Why was it as she looked up at him that all of those thoughts came rushing back, so quickly that she knew her cheeks were pink, and that despite her telling herself this was all just some game to him, she found herself viewing him in a slightly different light, noticing things she hadn’t noticed before – this was silly – she had let all that talk that Parvati and the others kept going on about, about boys and dates and all the nonsense they always talked about at night when they were back in their dormitory, get to her head and cause her to not think clearly. Didn’t help that she had actually broken down and read a book that Parvati had given her for her birthday, some silly romance book that she had thought was complete rubbish – yet she was noticing boys a bit more than before, especially some, although Ron frustrated her to no end and she wondered if she’d never not be mad at him for something. Him and – that Lavender needed to keep away from him – she hated that and – Merlin. Not to mention Adrian, who had ended up turning out just like she had expected. No, she wouldn’t make any more mistakes. It had been stupid to see if she could use him to make Ron jealous, when it didn’t look like it had worked. Ron could be so thick-headed! She just didn’t know what to do to get through to him. He might have been her best friend but was it her fault that she had started to feel something more? Hermione blinked a few times, snapping herself from her thoughts, and returned her attention to Draco. ”What are you doing out here so late? You should be in your common room or headed back.” . Credits to: REAL SLIM SHADY !? @ caution 2.0. never say never [/blockquote]

------------------------------------------------------------------ So give me reason to prove me wrong, To wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes-------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco was having a rather odd day. He hadn't been able to focus on his task, something that was not helping anything, and had been unable to even begin to concentrate on his studies. It was rather annoying, in his opinion, that every time he tried to think about something important he would eventually get very far off topic and end up thinking about someone else. Draco didn't like it, and wanted the thinkings about said person to stop. He sighed softly, now located in one of the comfortable armchairs of the common room, biding his time before he had to go and pay a visit to the Room of Requirement. In all truth, Draco would probably end up skiving off all his homework once in the Room of Requirement to further work on his little project. Besides, in his opinion, homework was the least of his worries. In a life or death situation, Draco didn't think homework would be nearly as important as the project in the Room of Requirement. Besides, there was so little going on that Draco figured he'd be able to catch up. Draco sighed once more, before pushing away from the comfortable leather and heading out of the common room, off to go and work on his little task some more.
After he'd left the common room, Draco began to walk around the castle rather aimlessly, putting off his task. His feet began to subconsciously steer him in the direction of the Room of Requirement, though Draco wasn't quite sure he'd be able to manage concentrating long enough to do what he needed to on the cabinet. Draco heaved a tired groan, running his hands through his silky hair. His hair fell back into place simply, with no ruffles nor a strand out of place. In his opinion, the whole prospect of fixing the cabinet was beginning to grow leery. He wasn't quite sure if he'd be able to manage to fix it in the span of time he got, but it wasn't like he could just walk up to the Dark Lord and ask for a time extension. So, Draco allowed his feet to carry himself upstairs, where he knew the familiar room would be hiding. The corridors he passed were relatively silent, providing him with much more thinking time than he deemed necessary. Out of all things he could have thought about, however, he thought about certain things that had happened with certain people. Draco couldn't believe he'd done that, and kept telling himself he'd just done what he'd done and said what he'd said because he didn't want Granger to get suspicious. There was nothing else to it, and Draco had thought about that phrase so many times over the past few days that he'd actually begun to believe it.
Draco was about to turn the corner that he knew led to the specific room he desired, when suddenly he felt someone slam into his chest. Draco gave an indignant cry of anger, brushing off the front of his robes, ready to tell the person off. What he didn't expect, however, was it to be her voice that was doing the apologizing. At least, until she realized who he was. "Yeah, it's me. And I believe you owe me an apology, considering you just rammed into me while I was walking here," Draco said in an almost casual way, raising an eyebrow at her and folding his arms across his chest. Figures, now I'll never be able to get anything accomplished, Draco thought in slight annoyance, figuring that he couldn't just let another opportunity to - er - get in her head pass him by. The cabinet, he supposed, would just have to wait a few more hours, until she'd gone to bed and he'd gone "back to his common room".
When she asked what he was doing, Draco gave her a look that he hoped would make her wonder why she had asked. "Honestly, I just answered that question. Don't you pay attention?" he wondered aloud, frowning at her. "I'm taking a little walk," he explained again, saying it slowly to egg her on just a little bit, as well as keep himself amused. He vaguely wondered what she was doing out here, unless she was on her rounds as a prefect. Draco inwardly groaned. No, he was most definitely not going to get anything done.
"Are you on duty as well, then?" he questioned, figuring that making small talk would be the best option for him at the particular moment.

[ She would have been lying if she had said she hadn’t thought about those times she had spent with him and she hated the fact that he could provoke such feelings inside her, yet how could she ignore how she felt when she was with him? He was a completely different person when they were alone – when he didn’t have to keep up that façade out here where others could see him. It was insane, honestly, that she was even thinking about this. A week ago she would never have imagined it and now it was in the forefront of her mind. She had to stick to reason and logic and not let feelings get in her way. He was manipulating her, speaking lies to get in her head, to mess with her sense of reality and the logical way she had always thought about things. He had to be. It was just – those times she had spent with him, he hadn’t been at all what she expected. There had to be something going on. She had noticed him scratching his arm the other night and she wondered if the rumors she had heard were true – that he was with the Dark Lord, a Death Eater, and possibly even helping him gain access to Hogwarts.
But of course that was absurd. No one could get into Hogwarts. It was completely secure and besides, Dumbledore was here and the Dark Lord wouldn’t dare attack with him here. He was terrified of him. And now there Draco stood in front of her, acting all casual and arrogant as usual, almost as if he had never let his guard down around her. Part of Hermione really wanted to believe that he had meant what he said but she knew it wasn’t possible. This was Malfoy they were talking about, and he only cared about himself. That much was painfully obvious. What was it with all these Slytherins and their reputations? She’d never understand why that was so important to some people, as she could care less of her own. She knew she was bright, brilliant even, and one of the top students in her year, but she wasn’t infallible, yet some people would overlook that thinking she thought herself the best. It wasn’t that just she thought that – it was a fact. Hermione frowned at his words. ”Yes I am actually. Now get back to your common room before I take house points,” she said coolly, moving to brush past him. Had she honestly expected him to have been truthful with her? She must have been Confunded – there was no other logical reason for it.
Hermione wouldn’t stick around here. She didn’t feel like dealing with him or his plots or whatever he was up to. Yes she had been keeping an eye on him, trying to see if he’d do anything suspicious, but nothing had happened yet. The only suspicious thing had been the way he had acted towards her, but every touch, every look – she hadn’t seen falseness in that, and that’s what frustrated her the most. It also didn’t help that every day she was reminded of those times when she’d look in the mirror, at the marks on her neck and her shoulders, ones that she used concealment charms during the day though they tended to wear off after awhile. Luckily her hair was long and full enough to cover any parts her collar didn’t. There was too much that could go wrong with all of this, and the last thing she wanted to do was put her best friends in danger. She had just been more vulnerable as of late, apparently, and she’d blame that Lavender and stupid stupid Ron who couldn’t seem to get it through his thick-head that she actually cared about him, more than just friends. But then she’d find herself in a situation like this, being so close to Draco, to those memories, and all of that would flood from her mind, and it was just them. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So give me reason to prove me wrong, To wash this memory clean Let the floods cross the distance in your eyes-------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco had a funny feeling that he knew why she was looking at him the way she was, and why she didn't seem to want to meet his gaze. Draco inwardly sighed, feeling a bit frustrated with how the whole thing was turning out. He knew that if he went around saying he'd been with her, Hogwarts would be in an uproar, and somehow people who shouldn't find out would find out. There again, Draco also knew Hermione didn't seem to particularly enjoy having to be secretive about everything. In Draco's mind, that's just what girls were like. Why would they want to spend their time with someone who "prides themselves too much on their reputation"? Draco had a feeling that this was why she was acting icy towards him. In all truth, he couldn't particularly blame her, though that didn't mean he didn't want to blame her. He sort of wished she would just make this easy on the both of them and stop over thinking things.
He had also begun to fear that she'd noticed him doing some -normally- absentminded things that would give him away. He continually forgot that while he could do these things in private, he shouldn't be staring at his arm or wincing when it burned when she was around. Draco knew she was smart, and also had a bad feeling she'd been growing suspicious. He'd been able to put her off with petty excuses and distracting her, but Draco had a hunch that it wouldn't be able to keep her at bay for long. He had been pondering so much, he almost missed her speak. Though, when she did say something, Draco sort of wished he had missed her words. She was still acting like an ice princess towards him, and though a part of him couldn't blame her, another -larger- part of him wanted to yell at her. Before he got a chance, however, she brushed right by his arm and began to walk away in a huff. Draco groaned inwardly and then took off after her.
"Granger, what's got," Draco began, thinking of a rather vulgar sentence to add at the end, but he changed tact and figured it would be in his best interest not to piss her off, "you all upset?" He didn't figure asking her what had her knickers in a twist would help his situation much, so that's why he'd fixed his sentence. She didn't seem very keen on stopping to let him catch up, however, so Draco trotted over to her and then walked to match her stride. Draco could practically feel the anger she was giving off, and could only hope it wasn't directed at him. But of course, it likely was.

[ The last thing she wanted to do was completely let her guard down, and yet the more time she spent with him, the more he was chipping away at that. She wasn’t being cold to him to be cold, it was just that she was scared where this was going, and she wasn’t sure if it was a good thing. She needed to confront him on what she had seen, what she had noticed, as she pieced everything together, and also about what exactly his plans were. She wasn’t about to let her friends get hurt, or put them in any kind of danger, no matter what sort of feelings were starting to develop. She didn’t expect him to go after her as she walked away and next thing she knew he was right there, matching her stride. She wanted to ignore him, to keep walking and not look back, but she was drawn to him. Sweet Merlin, she was, and it was scary to think that he might just mean those words he had said to her.
”I’m not upset, D- Malfoy, I’m just doing what I’m supposed to be doing. You know, making the rounds. Now if you don't mind, I have things to do,” she glanced at him and then she heard someone coming. There were two things she could have done at that point, and she didn’t know why she grabbed his sleeve and pulled him into a shadowed nook, hidden from whoever was coming. Probably a professor, maybe a student – though if it was a student she’d have to make sure they went back to their common room straight away or take points. No one was supposed to be up and around right now save for the Prefects or Professors and she could very well get into trouble if she was caught talking to him and not forcing him back to his common room. Then she shifted a little, ignoring the fact that she was closer to him than was appropriate, especially right now as she was still trying to figure out exactly how she was going to handle this, other than hex him into the next century. ”What are you up to Malfoy? I see right through this plan of yours, so if you’re thinking you can just blindside me and think I don’t see what’s really going on here, then you’re dafter than I originally thought.” Still, she couldn’t shake what she felt when she was this close to him, or when they were alone, and she wondered how exactly this had all come about? Just from a simple thunderstorm, really? They were complete opposites, as opposite as one could be, yet they were drawn together. She kept telling herself she was just being stupid about it all, and she needed to think about it all logically. That kept her clear-headed and didn’t let emotions cloud her judgment. Besides, he was probably just laughing about it, knowing he had successfully manipulated someone and potentially hurt Harry or Ron or any number of her friends in the process. Hermione did try to see the best in everyone, but some people had proven themselves over and over to be complete gits, Malfoy included – save for the past week since that thunderstorm. Just when they were alone, of course, and it felt like the same thing that had happened with Adrian – everything so secret, although Adrian she knew had just used her to make Pansy jealous, which she didn’t really care about since she had used him to make Ron jealous (which had backfired apparently), and Malfoy here had always been out to get Harry, so why not go through his friends. While he waited for her to respond, Draco quickly felt his mind begin to drift. He thought about his task, and how he had been told to specifically befriend and hurt the girl. Though Draco might have been known for his snarky remarks and rather cruel sense of humor, a part of him felt like hurting her that bad would be like crossing the invisible line that he was oh so carefully toeing at the moment. He couldn't really deny it any more. Now that he'd gotten to know her, he realized that perhaps she wasn't quite as bad as he'd been lead to believe. Sure, before she had been something akin to an insufferable know it all, but now...well, now Draco wasn't quite sure what he considered her to be. Though he was turning a blind eye to her blood status at the moment, Draco had a sickening feeling that someday it would come up in a conversation and quite possibly ruin their whole-relationship? If you could call it that.
Draco had just opened his mouth to make a retort, when she'd apparently heard something and the next thing he knew he was half pressed against her hidden in a little spot. Draco shifted in a slightly uncomfortable way, unsure of what to do or say about the whole thing. He didn't particularly want to be discovered, because though he had thought before he could deal with it and he felt bad for making her hide it, Draco knew part of the reason was he himself didn't want to deal with it. He didn't want to dig himself deeper into a pit of no return, and a part of him continually pressed that the more he spent time with her the deeper he was digging. Once he had taken in her appearance, Draco figured that she didn't seem too happy with the current situation either. "Then if you have things to do, maybe you should move along," Draco muttered, taking care to be quiet so the approaching person wouldn't hear him speaking. When she asked her next question, Draco resisted the urge to cringe. She wasn't draft. Of course not. She'd noticed the little things Draco normally wouldn't have to hide. He inwardly groaned and felt like smashing his head against the brick wall. No, this was not going very well at all.
"Plan? I have no idea what plan you're talking about, Granger," Draco retorted, figuring going the dumb route was the best way. He had no idea what would happen when she found out, but he could only hope she'd believe what he told her. Though he wasn't quite sure yet if he'd be telling the truth or not, Draco figured that somehow they'd find out sooner rather than later. "And I am not daft, thank you very much. I'm sorry I don't know the inside of all of our textbooks front cover to back."
Finally the boy sighed in something akin to exasperation. He knew what was happening to them, though he didn't want to admit it. He knew that she was starting to grow on him, and she had been with every moment he'd spent with her. Draco wanted to stop it all, but knew he couldn't fail the Dark Lord. The problem was, however, Draco wasn't sure if he was even doing it for his master anymore. Now, he couldn't seem to decide whether or not he was doing it because of loyalty and fear to the Dark Lord, or the desire to get to know Granger better. He felt like shuddering at the thought, if only because he knew what would happen to him, and possibly even her, if he ever admitted it to anyone.

[ It seemed that whoever was coming had done her a favor in a way, enabling her to pin Draco in a spot where she could finally get some answers. She didn’t appreciate being toyed with or led along. She had already dealt with that with Adrian, whom she had apparently been daft enough to actually believe his words. She should have just kept her guard up the entire time, but she had let him in and in the end it hadn’t been for the best. He thought he could still make her think he cared, and she had to laugh at the idiocy. She wasn’t going to fall for it a second time. Then there was Draco, no, Malfoy, who had somehow wormed his way into her life and started chipping away at her wall. She knew he had to have an ulterior motive and yet for some reason she kept coming back for more. How much time had they spent together recently? She couldn’t help but wonder if Ron or Harry were becoming suspicious, though it was pretty much normal for her not to be in the common room and somewhere else studying for hours upon hours every day. Things had been more tense with them lately, not because of being angry at one another or anything, but just because Harry was having to deal with some serious issues and Hermione was doing everything she could to try and figure out how to help him, yet it obviously wasn’t enough. That vulnerability had apparently given Draco the ‘in’ he had needed and now here they were.
She just gave him a look when he responded. ”Right. No plan, of course,” she retorted sarcastically. ”Stop treating me like I’m just another one of the girls you string along, Malfoy. I should have known better than to actually start to believe that you cared about me, ridiculous thought, you actually caring about someone,” she said coolly, glancing out towards the corridor as a few students passed by, hurrying off to their common rooms for the night. She could have gone out there to lecture them but right now she was focused on dealing with Malfoy and this ridiculous charade. She couldn’t believe she had started falling for this git, she must have had too much Pumpkin juice – that always seemed to mess with people. Hermione moved out of their little hideaway spot, stepping out into the corridor, and threw a darker look over her shoulder at him. ”You’re up to no good Malfoy and I will find out what. You should get back to your common room now before I take house points away” she said sharply, before turning and starting to walk away.
It wasn’t that she was necessarily frustrated with him but more at herself for actually letting herself get that close to him. She had far more important things to focus on and she tried to think of those as she walked down the corridor. However, there was one thing that was nagging on her mind and it wouldn’t go away until she did something about it. Hermione sighed and stopped, looking back at him, more serious and somewhat curious than angry, and then she walked back up to him, looking him straight in the eyes. . ”That other night, what you said to me…what you’ve said to me quite a lot lately actually, did you really mean it?” She didn’t want to believe him, at all, yet a part of her had to know for sure. She could tell when he was lying to her, it was obvious in the way he acted, even the slightest reactions. She had to know how to tell that about someone, or at least have a better success rate being a Prefect and hopefully next year Head Girl. She’d leave after she heard his answer, she doubted he’d do anything right there in the middle of the corridor – all for the sake of reputation. That’s all Slytherins seemed to care about, other than themselves of course and their own ambitions. It was a key distinguishing factor between them and Gryffindors. Though not everyone was exactly like the stereotypes of their houses, Hermione had learned that well enough over the years.

Draco had to resist the urge to fidget under her gaze. She kept giving him this horribly scrutinizing look, and it was starting to make him feel a little bit unnerved. Her constant looks made him want to wince, but he didn't and instead listen to what she said. Draco bit down on his tongue to keep from saying anything, though he had no idea what he would say. If she'd have cornered him earlier and asked him those same questions, he would've lied and told her that yes, he cared about her and no, he most certainly was not stringing her along. Now, however, Draco wasn't really sure if that would be a lie, because he didn't feel like hurting her like that. Draco knew he was slowly backing himself up into a tight and rather uncomfortable position in this entire mess, but he could honestly say he'd never planned on anything real happening between them. Of course, just like his usual luck, that little plan was going down the drain. He frowned a bit, not liking how she used his last name. "Look, Granger, I'm not treating you like the girls that I string along and play around with. And I do-," he cut off, feeling his pride overwhelm what he was going to say. That, and the fact that he had no idea what would happen if he actually said it now. When she kept giving him this expectant look, however, Draco sighed in a slightly grudging way and began to fiddle with the silver snake ring on his hand. How the hell does she manage to do this to me? Draco wondered, inwardly frowning at the thought. He sort of hated how she managed to make him pause and actually be sincere, because it was something he was not used to. He shifted from one foot to the other, hoping to brush off what he was going to say. He doubted she'd let him not finish though, but he moved towards her slightly as she turned to walk away. This wasn't exactly how he'd wanted it to go, but before he could open his mouth to call her back, she turned around.
It didn't take a fool to see she was frustrated, that much Draco knew. He watched her silently as she paused, seemingly in a disagreement with herself. Draco stared at her, waiting for her to say something. He hoped she wouldn't try to walk away again, because if she did he'd probably have to stop her. He didn't want her to leave, for whatever reason that was. In his musings, he didn't notice she'd walked right back up to him until he was looking into her eyes, a feeling of slight surprise settling in his stomach. "You mean...are you really asking..." Draco trailed off, pretty sure he knew exactly what she was talking about. He glanced down at the floor. "Of course I meant it. I don't just say things like that to anyone," he grumbled, glad that it was darker where they were. A slightly embarrassed feeling had suddenly washed over him, though he wasn't quite sure why.
Draco thought about this feeling for a few moments, making sure to keep his hand on her wrist so she wouldn't leave, before he looked back up at her. "I'm serious. I'm not lying, Hermione," he murmured, letting go of her wrist and letting his own hand fall to his side. Draco couldn't believe it, mostly because he actually was serious. He wasn't lying, not about any of it. Draco then went to fiddle with his ring a bit more, hoping she'd believe him this time.
